Service Events

Every semester there are large one-time events, that take more of a time commitment (usually between 2-4 hours), but not as much time as a service trip. Keep these in mind and try to plan to be a part of these special times.

Dance Marathon

Dance the night away while raising money for a great cause. This Rutgers-wide event has a Catholic Center coordinator, so if you are interested in helping out, please contact Myra Melcer.

Operation Rice Bowl (Lenten Program)

Perhaps you are aware of this program from your own parish or religious education program. A country-wide effort by Catholic Relief Services to serve the poorest of the poor throughout the world. Each student at Masses will receive a Rice Bowl and is encouraged to pray and donate change throughout the season of Lent. What we look at as spare change could mean the difference between life and death for these individuals. If you want to know more, please contact Kara Dods.

Bridges

Serving the homeless can seem so distant, until you meet face to face. This program allows students to meet the homeless where they are and assist them with food and clothing that they so desperately need.

Trunk or Treat

Halloween program that works with Sacred Heart Church in New Brunswick. It provides a safe area for kids to trick or treat. Help us decorate our car and dress up to bring some inner city children some treats without any tricks. In 2010, we had three cars giving out candy had approximately 60 bags of candy and we RAN OUT! (no worries, Sacred Heart provided more), but there are LOTS of kids!

Christmas Gift Giving

Advent program that provides Christmas gifts through Catholic Charities for those who probably won't get any gifts during the Christmas season. The announcements are made the week before Thanksgiving and gifts should be brought back in December. In 2010, we provided gifts for 45 children!

Rutgers Against Hunger Food Drive

Rutgers against Hunger is always looking to fill their foodbank, but the Catholic Center usually makes a drive of their own to help them out. Our food drive in November 2010 saw students bring in all sorts of non-perishable food items for the hungry.
